In the Garden at Chislehurst (B&W)
IN THE GARDEN AT CHISLEHURST served as my refuge during the tumultuous period of 2020–2021. While working as a nanny to a four-year-old, immersing myself in his world offered a respite from the pandemic’s stress and uncertainty.
It prompted contemplation on Einstein’s question, “Is the universe a friendly place?” In the midst of relentless negative news, I had momentarily forgotten that it could be.
Fortunately, the setting allowed us to be outdoors, surrounded by nature. The child’s innate curiosity led me into a world of order, harmony, sunshine, and flowers. Watching him create imaginary berry pies in the dirt shifted my perspective. From his low vantage point, I began to notice the dracaena plants towering above us.
With my iPhone, I leaned close to their stalks and photographed upward, transforming the familiar garden into a world that felt mysterious and separate from our worries. During a time of profound uncertainty, the garden reminded me that beauty endured.
